The Supersonic Tsunami — and the Crisis of Symbolic Unemployment

Peter Diamandis calls the next five years a “supersonic tsunami.”

The phrase is effective because it captures a real feeling: artificial intelligence is improving rapidly, intelligence is becoming cheaper, robotics is advancing, medicine is becoming more computational, and institutions built for a slower world are already struggling to keep up.

But the phrase also reveals the genre of argument.

This is exponential futurism: a form of writing in which capability is the unit of analysis and humanity is treated as the implied subject. Intelligence gets cheaper. Models get stronger. Robots enter factories and homes. Biology becomes programmable. Transport becomes autonomous. GDP rises. Abundance arrives.

That may be broadly correct as a map of technological possibility.

But it is not yet a map of lived experience.

Digital Phenomenology asks a different question:

What happens to a particular human being when technological capability accelerates faster than meaning can reorganize?

That is not a minor philosophical addition to the abundance argument. It is a different problem.

The Hidden Arrows

The futurist story often moves through a chain of arrows:

Cheaper AI becomes AGI.
AGI becomes recursive self-improvement.
Recursive self-improvement becomes superintelligence.
Superintelligence solves science.
Robots solve labor.
Biology solves disease.
Abundance solves politics.

Each arrow may contain some truth.

But each also hides bottlenecks: energy, chips, experiments, factories, supply chains, regulation, institutions, inequality, law, legitimacy, trust, and social adaptation.

More importantly, each arrow hides another question:

What happens to human beings while the old symbolic world is being dismantled?

A society does not become livable simply because it becomes more capable.

It becomes livable when people can still understand where they are, what they are responsible for, who needs them, what counts as contribution, and why their actions matter.

The Coming Crisis Is Not Only Economic

The obvious fear is unemployment.

AI replaces knowledge work. Robots replace physical work. Automated systems replace routine coordination, customer service, logistics, production, diagnostics, translation, design, administration, and eventually much more.

But “unemployment” may be too narrow a word.

The deeper danger is symbolic unemployment.

Symbolic unemployment begins when a person loses not only a job, but the structures through which effort became meaningful.

For generations, the social chain has looked something like this:

effort → mastery → contribution → recognition → identity

You learned a craft.
You became competent.
Your competence mattered to others.
Others recognized that contribution.
You acquired a role in a shared world.

This did not always produce happiness. Many jobs were exhausting, exploitative, repetitive, or badly paid.

But the chain still provided orientation.

A nurse knew that care mattered.
A carpenter knew that skill mattered.
A teacher knew that explanation mattered.
A mechanic knew that repair mattered.
A writer knew that a rare ability to shape language could matter publicly.

When automated systems can perform these tasks faster, cheaper, and sometimes better, the threat is not simply loss of income.

The threat is the loss of a public anchor for competence.

A person may still have abilities. They may still have imagination, empathy, taste, memory, courage, and care. But institutions shaped by economic scarcity may no longer know how to recognize these qualities unless they are translated into market performance.

That is the symbolic problem.

Initial State 1 Under Modern Conditions

In the Memecraft framework, Collapse is followed by Initial State 1.

Initial State 1 is not simply emptiness. It is the moment before a livable symbolic order has been selected. It is a field of possibility before form, orientation, and story have stabilized.

The technological tsunami may push many people toward such a condition.

Not because they have become primitive.

Not because technology has removed all meaning.

But because the structures that once organized identity may dissolve faster than new structures can be built.

A person is then surrounded by infinite choice, infinite content, infinite images, infinite synthetic personalities, infinite entertainment, infinite advice, and infinite possible futures.

Yet they may have no credible answer to a simple question:

What am I for?

This is Initial State 1 under modern conditions:

hyper-available possibility without an orienting symbolic form.

The person has options but no world.

They have access but no direction.

They have stimulation but no story.

They may be more informed than any previous generation while becoming less able to select what deserves commitment.

The Problem With “Ride the Wave”

“Ride the wave” is useful advice for entrepreneurs.

It is not enough for a civilization.

A wave can be surfed only by people who already have balance, skill, a board, a coastline, and some idea of what they are doing.

Most people are not standing outside history with a surfboard.

They are inside families, schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, aging bodies, legal systems, debt structures, media systems, and inherited expectations.

They cannot simply “adapt” at the speed of a model release.

The danger is not that everyone becomes passive.

The danger is that people become increasingly active inside symbolic systems they do not understand.

They consume generated worlds.
They form attachments to artificial personalities.
They compete for relevance inside algorithmic attention markets.
They repeat identities supplied by feeds.
They confuse visibility with value.
They confuse machine fluency with wisdom.
They confuse abundance with orientation.

A civilization can become materially richer while becoming symbolically poorer.

The Missing Infrastructure

The answer is not to preserve meaningless work merely to keep people occupied.

That would be a technological version of make-work bureaucracy: inventing tasks so that people can continue to feel necessary.

The real task is more difficult.

We need new symbolic infrastructure.

This means forms of life in which human participation remains consequential even when it is no longer economically scarce.

That may include:

  • apprenticeship without the old labor-market logic
  • civic contribution and local responsibility
  • artistic and cultural practice
  • care work recognized as public value
  • education built around judgment rather than memorization
  • intergenerational roles
  • community rituals and shared projects
  • institutions that reward attention, reliability, courage, interpretation, and stewardship

The future does not need fewer humans.

It needs better ways to recognize what humans are uniquely responsible for.

Not because machines cannot imitate many human capacities.

But because a world is not merely a collection of optimized tasks.

A world is a field of responsibility.

From Generated Worlds to Livable Worlds

AI will generate worlds faster than people can evaluate them.

It will generate films, voices, teachers, friends, histories, images, arguments, simulations, religions, identities, and persuasive realities tailored to every person’s preferences and vulnerabilities.

That makes symbolic literacy a basic survival skill.

The central question will not be whether a system can generate something convincing.

It will be whether a person can determine what kind of relation that thing asks them to enter.

Does it deepen attention or fragment it?

Does it strengthen responsibility or outsource it?

Does it clarify reality or aestheticize confusion?

Does it connect people to consequences or trap them in spectacle?

This is why the key future distinction is not between human and machine.

It is between:

signal and spectacle
and
a generated world and a livable one.

A livable world is one in which a person can still locate relationship, consequence, responsibility, and a reason to act.

The Real Work of the Next Five Years

The next five years may indeed bring a technological acceleration unlike anything most people have experienced.

But technological abundance is not a self-interpreting event.

It does not automatically tell us what matters.

It does not automatically distribute dignity.

It does not automatically produce wisdom.

And it does not automatically give people a reason to live well inside the new conditions.

The technical question is how quickly intelligence, robotics, biotechnology, energy, and automation advance.

The human question is whether our symbolic systems can reorganize quickly enough to keep experience livable.

That is the deeper challenge of the supersonic tsunami.

Not merely how to surf it.

But how to build a world in which people do not disappear beneath it.
